Matt Dennis Plays & Sings Matt Dennis Live In Hollywood

This 2005 release from the Spanish label Fresh Sound Records serves as a vital archival document for the work of Matt Dennis, an accomplished songwriter, pianist, and vocalist prominent during the Great American Songbook era. Originally recorded live in Hollywood, the tracks capture Dennis in his element, showcasing the intimate, sophisticated cabaret style that defined his career. Fresh Sound Records issued this collection as part of their commitment to preserving jazz and vocal performances that might otherwise be lost to time, providing listeners with a raw, unedited glimpse into his club repertoire.

The album is noted for its focus on Dennis's unique approach to phrasing and his witty, understated delivery, which helped him craft enduring standards like 'Angel Eyes' and 'Everything Happens to Me.' As a songwriter who often collaborated with lyricist Earl Brent, Dennis possessed a distinct harmonic sensibility that favored nuance over grandiosity. This collection is widely appreciated by jazz historians for offering a candid portrait of a musician who influenced generations of pop and jazz vocalists, highlighting his rare ability to marry melodic complexity with accessible, emotional lyricism.
