Nestor Marconi Trio, Leonardo Marconi & Oscar Giunta

Released in 1996 on the Melopea Discos label, this self-titled album captures a pivotal moment for bandoneon master Néstor Marconi. During this period, Marconi was solidifying his reputation as a bridge between the traditional tango forms of the past and a more contemporary, improvisational jazz-influenced style. The trio, featuring Leonardo Marconi on piano and Oscar Giunta on drums, represents a deliberate departure from the large orchestras that defined the genre’s golden age, favoring instead a sparse, intimate interplay that highlights individual technical prowess.

The production philosophy behind this record reflects the influence of Melopea Discos, the label founded by Litto Nebbia, which prioritized artistic integrity over commercial trends. The trio’s arrangement was designed to showcase the bandoneon not just as a rhythmic instrument, but as a lead voice capable of complex emotional expression within a chamber-music setting. Upon its release, the album was well-received by tango aficionados and critics for its technical precision and the respectful yet innovative way the musicians navigated the tension between the classic canon and modern musical exploration.
