Nils Holgerssons Underbara Resa / Gösta Berlings Saga

This 2019 release on the Sterling label features orchestral works by Swedish composer Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist, specifically focusing on his compositions inspired by classic Swedish literature. The album highlights the symphonic suite based on Selma Lagerlöf’s 'Nils Holgerssons underbara resa' and the tone poem associated with 'Gösta Berlings saga.' These works reflect Lundquist's deep integration of Swedish cultural narratives into the 20th-century orchestral tradition, emphasizing a late-romantic sound palette tailored for vivid storytelling.

Lundquist, known for his prolific output in both film scores and concert music, composed these pieces to translate the expansive, folkloric atmosphere of Lagerlöf's writing into musical form. The recordings feature the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, which provides the precise, sweeping dynamic range necessary to capture the composer’s cinematic intentions. Upon its release, the recording was received by classical music enthusiasts as a significant archival effort to preserve Lundquist’s contribution to the Nordic symphonic canon, which often bridges the gap between traditional tonal composition and more modern, atmospheric orchestration.
