Pierrot Lunaire • Herzgewächse • Ode To Napoleon Buonaparte = 月に憑かれたピエロ / 他

This 1998 Deutsche Grammophon release represents a definitive recording of Arnold Schoenberg’s key expressionist works, featuring the Ensemble InterContemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez. The collection centers on the 1912 melodrama Pierrot Lunaire, a cornerstone of Second Viennese School composition that revolutionized vocal technique through the use of Sprechstimme, a hybrid of speech and song. By pairing this with Herzgewächse and the Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, the release contextualizes Schoenberg’s evolution from post-romantic harmonic expansion to the structured dissonance of his later periods.

The recording is celebrated for the analytical precision of Pierre Boulez, a conductor known for his lifelong commitment to clarifying the textures of Schoenberg’s complex scores. Soprano Christine Schäfer received significant critical acclaim for her performance, which was noted for its nuanced balance between the dramatic requirements of the texts and the rigorous demands of the atonal notation. The album stands as a benchmark for 20th-century avant-garde interpretation, reflecting the high-fidelity production standards associated with the Deutsche Grammophon 20th Century Classics series.
