Pierrot Lunaire

Pierrot Lunaire, Op. 21, was composed by Arnold Schoenberg in 1912 as a setting for twenty-one poems by Albert Giraud. It stands as a pivotal work of the Second Viennese School, famously employing Sprechstimme, a vocal technique that sits between speaking and singing. The composition emerged during a period of intense experimentation in early twentieth-century music, seeking to push the boundaries of tonality and capture the dark, psychological landscape of expressionism.

This specific 2009 CBS Masterworks reissue captures a quintessential interpretation led by conductor Pierre Boulez and featuring mezzo-soprano Yvonne Minton. Boulez was widely regarded as a definitive authority on twentieth-century avant-garde music, and his collaboration with Minton is noted for its precision, clarity, and structural rigor. Originally recorded in the late 1970s, this release has been frequently praised by musicologists for its faithful adherence to Schoenberg’s demanding technical requirements, ensuring that the work remains a benchmark recording for students and collectors of modern classical repertoire.
