Where it came from
Plan B was released in 2001 as the seventh studio album by Huey Lewis and the News, marking a significant transition for the band. After departing from their longtime major label, Elektra, the group signed with Silvertone Records, an imprint known for its focus on blues and rock artists. This move represented a shift toward a more independent, roots-oriented creative direction that allowed the band to move away from the high-pressure pop production that defined their multi-platinum era in the 1980s.
The album was produced with an emphasis on the band's core strengths—classic rock and rhythm and blues sensibilities. Rather than attempting to chase the contemporary radio trends of the early 2000s, the musicians opted for a soulful, stripped-back sound that showcased their live performance chemistry. While it did not reach the commercial heights of their earlier work, it was generally well-received by long-term fans as a sincere return to the band's musical foundation.
