Porgy & Bess Extended (Sammy Davis, Jr. & Carmen McRae On Decca)

This 2010 release serves as a reissue compilation focusing on the collaborative interpretations of George Gershwin's iconic folk opera, Porgy and Bess, by Sammy Davis Jr. and Carmen McRae. Originally recorded during the late 1950s for the Decca label, these sessions captured the two performers at a peak of their interpretive powers. The material was released at a time when Decca was leaning into the sophisticated vocal jazz aesthetic that defined mid-century American popular music, aiming to showcase the chemistry between Davis's dynamic stage presence and McRae's nuanced, cool-toned vocal delivery.

The production sought to offer a streamlined, definitive version of the operatic score, stripping away some of the heavier orchestral arrangements in favor of arrangements that highlighted the soloists' rhythmic versatility. By the time of this 2010 reissue by Music-Box, the recordings had gained a reputation among jazz historians as essential documents of post-war vocal crossover. The design aesthetic of this edition leans into the classic mid-century graphic style associated with the original era, intended to appeal to both long-time fans of the Gershwin songbook and collectors interested in the evolution of vocal jazz.
