Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the Lodia label, this recording of Rossini Overtures features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of the Argentine-born conductor Carlos Païta. Païta, who founded the Lodia label specifically to capture his interpretations with high fidelity, was known for his uncompromising approach to studio production and his preference for a dramatic, visceral sound profile.
The album reflects Païta’s broader commitment to mid-to-late 20th-century audiophile engineering, utilizing the specific acoustic signatures of the London recording sessions he favored. Critics at the time noted the recording for its striking dynamic range and clarity, characterizing the performances as high-energy readings that prioritized theatrical momentum over the more traditional, understated elegance often associated with Rossini's orchestral overtures.
