Where it came from
S klavírem was released in 2001 as a collaborative project between the Czech satirist, singer, and presenter Ester Kočičková and the composer and pianist Lubomír Nohavica. Emerging from the vibrant and often irreverent Czech cabaret and chanson scene, the album serves as a vehicle for Kočičková’s characteristically acerbic and witty lyrical style, which frequently subverts traditional musical forms through dark humor and theatrical delivery.
The album’s design and musical composition lean heavily into the aesthetic of minimalist piano chanson. Lubomír Nohavica’s arrangements were intended to strip away production artifice, placing full focus on the interplay between his precise, classical-leaning piano work and Kočičková’s performance. Upon its release, the recording was well-regarded within the Czech alternative music circuit for its stylistic purity and the sharp, observational intelligence of the lyrics.
