Scheherazade - Dornröschen • Romeo Und Julia

This release, part of the Formula Classics series issued around 1990, represents a mid-era effort to distribute standard orchestral repertoire to a broader audience during the peak of the CD format's dominance. By pairing Rimsky-Korsakov's lush, programmatic Scheherazade with selections from Tchaikovsky's quintessential ballet and tone poem works, the compilation was designed as a survey of 19th-century Russian romanticism. It reflects the industry practice of the time, which sought to package canonical classical recordings into accessible, thematic volumes for the casual listener.

The design of the Formula Classics line emphasized clarity and functional branding, often utilizing archival recordings licensed from major labels to fill out their catalog. This specific volume functions as a highlights disc, prioritizing the melodic accessibility of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet alongside the narrative sweep of Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite. While the production values were modest compared to premium boutique labels of the era, the disc serves as a practical artifact of late-twentieth-century home classical music appreciation.
