Shake Hands With Vandenburg

Shake Hands with Vandenburg was released in 1996 by Hans Vandenburg, a Dutch musician best known as the frontman for the new wave band Gruppo Sportivo. This solo project emerged during a period in which Vandenburg sought to explore more intimate songwriting structures outside the collective framework of his primary group. The record serves as a testament to his long-standing career in the Dutch rock scene, capturing his signature blend of irony, narrative lyricism, and melodic experimentation.

The album was released on Van Record Company, an independent label imprint associated with the artist’s own production efforts. In terms of design and aesthetic, the release is characteristic of mid-nineties independent European pressings, prioritizing a focus on the singer-songwriter tradition. While the album was primarily received by a dedicated local fanbase and critics of the Dutch alternative scene, it remains a notable entry in Vandenburg's discography for its departure from the high-energy, art-pop sound that defined his earlier commercial success.
