Where it came from
Released in 2023 on BCR Los Angeles, this project serves as a collaborative tribute to the late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. Shooter Jennings, a long-time admirer of Zevon's acerbic and literary approach to rock music, assembled his backing band, The Werewolves of Los Angeles, to curate a selection of deep cuts and classics. The record was conceived as an authentic exploration of Zevon’s cynical yet tender songwriting, aiming to capture the dark humor and emotional gravity that defined the original compositions.
The album reflects Jennings' ongoing interest in the lineage of 1970s Los Angeles rock culture. In terms of design and production, the project utilizes a gritty, live-in-the-room aesthetic to mirror the raw spirit of Zevon’s own recording sessions. It was received by fans and critics as a sincere archival gesture rather than a standard covers album, highlighting Jennings’ commitment to preserving the influence of unconventional songwriters within the modern Americana and outlaw country landscape.
