Teiko Saito meets David Matthews: A Life with Jazz

Released in 2022 by Scarecrow Recordings, this collaboration represents a project between Japanese vocalist Teiko Saito and the veteran American jazz pianist and arranger David Matthews. The album serves as a reflection of Saito's enduring career in jazz and her artistic synergy with Matthews, who has maintained a prolific presence in the Japanese jazz scene for several decades. The recording was produced to highlight the nuanced, interplay-driven arrangements that Matthews is known for, providing a sophisticated backdrop for Saito's vocal interpretations of jazz standards and original compositions.

The aesthetic and musical direction of the project draw upon the legacy of the sophisticated jazz-pop and straight-ahead traditions that have historically resonated well within Japan’s contemporary jazz circuit. By bringing together Matthews’ orchestral sensibilities and Saito’s seasoned vocal delivery, the album was crafted to offer a mature, cohesive listening experience. It has been received primarily within niche jazz communities as a testament to the cross-cultural artistic exchanges that remain a vital component of the international jazz landscape.
