Provenance

Where it came from

The Best of Edgar Wallace was compiled and released by the German label All Score Media in 2000 to celebrate the unique musical legacy of the Rialto-Film Edgar Wallace series. These films, produced between 1959 and 1972, became a cultural phenomenon in West Germany, blending mystery, crime, and gothic atmosphere. The music was essential to this aesthetic, often utilizing avant-garde, jazz-inflected, and psychedelic arrangements that pushed the boundaries of traditional soundtrack scoring.

The collection highlights the work of prominent composers like Peter Thomas, Martin Böttcher, and Nora Orlandi, who defined the sound of German genre cinema during this era. Peter Thomas, in particular, is noted for his innovative and sometimes experimental approach, which sought to modernize the thriller genre with sophisticated, energetic, and frequently unconventional instrumentation. Upon its release, the compilation was well-received by film score enthusiasts and collectors of European lounge and soundtrack music for its preservation of these distinct, often overlooked compositions.
