Where it came from
The Jolly Boys Live! was released in 1991 on Grass Men's Records, capturing the infectious spirit of mento, a traditional Jamaican folk music style that served as a precursor to ska and reggae. Recorded in Port Antonio, the album documents the ensemble's long-standing residency at the Trident Hotel, where they became local legends for their acoustic interpretations of both folk standards and contemporary pop songs.
The group’s instrumentation, typically featuring a bamboo saxophone, rumba box, guitar, and banjo, created a distinct, earthy sound that garnered a cult following among tourists and music enthusiasts alike. By the early 1990s, the release aimed to preserve the authentic, informal atmosphere of their live performances, reflecting a design ethos rooted in simplicity and the preservation of Jamaican musical heritage rather than commercial over-production.
