The Womack Live / Safety Zone

The Womack Live / Safety Zone CD reissue, released by Stateside in 2004, serves as a significant archival pairing of two distinct phases of Bobby Womack's illustrious career. The collection captures a live performance recorded in Tokyo during the late 1980s alongside the 1984 studio album Safety Zone, which was originally produced during a period when Womack was navigating the shifting landscape of soul and R&B. By combining a concert recording with a studio project, this release provided listeners with a comprehensive look at Womack’s enduring stage presence and his sophisticated, late-career studio production.

The design of this release aligns with the Stateside archival catalog aesthetic, focusing on preserving the raw vitality of Womack’s vocal delivery and his signature fusion of gospel-infused soul with contemporary R&B production techniques. Critics and fans often view this specific package as a vital document of Womack’s resilience as an artist, emphasizing his ability to command a live audience while maintaining the polished, mid-eighties aesthetic that defined his mid-career sound. The reissue was well-received by soul enthusiasts for consolidating harder-to-find recordings into a single, accessible format.
