Théodore Botrel Chanté Par René Jacq

Théodore Botrel was a prolific early 20th-century songwriter known as the 'bard of Brittany,' whose romanticized, sentimental ballads helped define the popular perception of Breton culture during his lifetime. These compositions were deeply rooted in the folklore and rural traditions of the region, often focusing on themes of sea-faring life, faith, and local identity.

This recording features René Jacq, a noted interpreter of the Breton vocal tradition, performing Botrel's repertoire. It was issued under the Arfolk label, a company established in the mid-20th century that played a crucial role in documenting and preserving the folk music of Brittany. By recording these heritage songs, Arfolk sought to bridge the gap between Botrel’s turn-of-the-century popularity and the folk revival movements that emerged decades later.
