Théodore Dubois

Released in 2011 on the Mirare label, this recording seeks to rehabilitate the reputation of Théodore Dubois, a composer who served as director of the Conservatoire de Paris but whose legacy was largely overshadowed by his strict traditionalism and rejection of the Impressionist movement. By pairing the Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Cello Concerto with the Orchestre Poitou-Charentes, the album provides a focused look at Dubois’s command of Romantic orchestral structures and melodic lyricism, which had fallen into relative obscurity during the twentieth century.

The production features pianist Jean-François Heisser and cellist Marc Coppey, both of whom were instrumental in bringing a scholarly yet passionate approach to these compositions. The release was received as a significant contribution to the French late-Romantic discography, praised by critics for its clarity and for offering a nuanced perspective on a composer often maligned by his contemporaries. It remains a key reference for those interested in the post-Saint-Saëns French concerto tradition.
