Where it came from
Released in 1992 on the Myron label, this album serves as a poignant musical tribute by Belgian singer-songwriter Dirk Van Esbroeck. The project reflects his deep commitment to the Flemish literary tradition, specifically focusing on the works of poets like Minne and Van Nijlen. Van Esbroeck, a central figure in the Belgian folk revival, crafted these compositions to bring lyrical depth and a meditative, acoustic atmosphere to contemporary folk music.
The album is noted for its understated arrangement and focus on vocal delivery, characteristic of Van Esbroeck's signature style. By setting these specific poems to music, he aimed to bridge the gap between classic literary heritage and the accessibility of the folk song format. Upon its release, the recording was received as a respectful and intellectual entry in the late twentieth-century Belgian folk catalog, appreciated by enthusiasts of poetic chanson and traditional instrumentation.
