Where it came from
Released in 1995 on the Global Village Music label, this compilation serves as a curated archive of traditional folk music specific to the Commonwealth of Virginia. It emerged during a period of renewed interest in regional American musicology, functioning as a primary-source document intended to preserve the lyrical and melodic nuances of oral traditions that were increasingly at risk of being lost to mainstream homogenization.
The album features a variety of field recordings and archival performances, focusing on the preservation of ballads, work songs, and lyrical narratives unique to the Appalachian and Tidewater regions. While Global Village Music was known for their meticulous approach to ethnographic sound, this specific entry was designed as a scholarly reference point for ethnomusicologists and folk enthusiasts, receiving quiet praise for its commitment to maintaining the raw, authentic quality of the original performances.
