Provenance

Where it came from

This 2021 release by Avid Entertainment functions as a retrospective compilation dedicated to the influential jazz saxophonist Wardell Gray. Gray was a pivotal figure in the development of bebop and cool jazz during the 1940s and 1950s, renowned for his fluid tone and technical agility. This collection draws from his foundational recordings, which capture the transition from big band swing to the improvisational complexity that defined the West Coast jazz scene.

The album was produced by Avid Entertainment as part of their broader jazz reissue series, which aims to preserve and reintroduce historically significant tracks to modern audiences. The compilation design follows the label's standard minimalist archival aesthetic, focusing on clean presentation and the remastering of original sessions. By grouping these seminal performances together, the release provides a concise survey of Gray’s legacy, offering listeners a structured entry point into the repertoire of a musician whose career was tragically cut short.
