Where it came from
This 1 Cash coin, known as the 'Huo Quan,' was issued in 14 CE during the brief Xin Dynasty under the usurper emperor Wang Mang. It represents the fifth and final currency reform of his reign, a period marked by chaotic economic experimentation and multiple attempts to centralize the Chinese monetary system by abolishing older bronze knife and spade money in favor of standardized round coins.
The coin features a distinct, geometric calligraphy style often referred to as 'iron wire' script, characterized by thin, rigid strokes that reflect the aesthetic leanings of the era. The design was intended to project order and imperial authority during a time of immense political instability, though these coins—and the regime itself—did not survive the eventual restoration of the Han Dynasty, which favored different standards.
