1 Cash - Wang Mang (Fifth reform; With inner rim)

This 1 Cash coin, known as a Huo Quan, was issued under the reign of the usurper emperor Wang Mang during the Xin Dynasty. Introduced as part of his fifth currency reform in 14 CE, these coins were intended to replace the previous, highly unpopular currency systems that had caused significant economic disruption across the region. The design reflects the highly stylized, elegant, and slender seal script calligraphy that characterized the aesthetic preferences of Wang Mang’s administration.

The coin features a distinct square central hole and raised rims, an engineering detail designed to prevent clipping and improve durability during circulation. While the reform was part of an ambitious attempt by Wang Mang to stabilize the state economy and enforce state control over monetary circulation, his tenure remained economically volatile. Despite the failure of his broader political project, the Huo Quan is notable for its exceptional craftsmanship and remains a primary reference point for collectors of ancient Chinese numismatics.
