The 1810 Penang one-cent coin was commissioned by the British East India Company to facilitate trade and local commerce within the Prince of Wales Island, now known as Penang, Malaysia. During this era, the island served as a critical entrepôt for the British trade routes between India and China, necessitating a standardized currency that could replace the varied regional mediums of exchange previously used by local merchants and settlers.

The design features the East India Company bale mark on the obverse, a symbol of the company's monopoly and mercantile authority, while the reverse displays a Persian inscription denoting the value and the location of issue. This specific aesthetic was intended to bridge the gap between Western administrative standards and the existing linguistic and commercial traditions of the diverse population living in the Straits Settlements, serving as a functional tool for the burgeoning colonial economy.
