Where it came from
The 1867 Devins and Bolton token is a notable piece of Canadian numismatic history, originating from a period when merchants frequently issued their own copper tokens to alleviate a chronic shortage of official small-denomination coinage. Devins and Bolton were prominent chemists and druggists based in Montreal, and they commissioned these tokens as a form of private currency to facilitate local transactions while serving as an effective, permanent advertisement for their business.
The token's design reflects the practical nature of nineteenth-century trade tokens, typically featuring the business name and location on the obverse to establish commercial authority. These pieces were struck during the twilight era of merchant tokens, shortly after the Canadian Confederation, and they are regarded today as significant artifacts that document the transition toward a unified national currency system in early Canada.
