Where it came from
The Australian one-cent coin was introduced in 1966 as part of the country's transition to decimal currency, replacing the British-influenced pound, shilling, and pence system. By 1985, the series featured the third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf. This portrait, which shows the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem, was adopted by the Royal Australian Mint in 1985 to replace the earlier Arnold Machin design.
The reverse side of the coin features the iconic feather-tailed glider, a design by Stuart Devlin, who was responsible for the artwork on all Australian decimal coins from the one-cent to the fifty-cent piece. While the one-cent coin was once a staple of everyday commerce, the rising cost of metal eventually led the Australian government to cease production of the denomination in 1990. The coins were withdrawn from circulation in 1992, marking a transition toward rounding cash transactions to the nearest five cents.
