Where it came from
The 1911 Australian halfpenny represents the inaugural year of independent Australian coinage issued under the reign of King George V. Following the passage of the Commonwealth Coinage Act 1909, the young nation sought to transition away from reliance on British currency, establishing its own distinct monetary identity while maintaining the monarch's profile to signify imperial ties.
The obverse features the effigy of King George V designed by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, a prominent Australian sculptor chosen for his connection to the British Royal Mint. The reverse displays the Commonwealth coat of arms, a design choice meant to assert national sovereignty and institutional stability, reflecting the nascent pride of a country moving toward greater self-governance in the early twentieth century.
