Where it came from
The 2019 Australian one-cent coin featuring Mr. Squiggle was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the beloved children's television character. Mr. Squiggle, a puppet with a pencil for a nose who brought drawings to life, first appeared on Australian television in 1959. This commemorative issue celebrated his enduring cultural impact on generations of Australian viewers.
The design of the coin was developed in collaboration with the estate of Norman Hetherington, the creator and puppeteer behind the character. It features the iconic Moon character, one of Mr. Squiggle's close friends, capturing the whimsical aesthetic of the original program. The series was released as a collector's item and was well-received by fans of the show and numismatists for its nostalgic appeal and departure from traditional coinage portraiture.
