Where it came from
The 2006 Canadian one-cent coin featuring the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II represents a transitional moment in Canadian numismatic history. Following the decision to modernize production processes, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a magnetic steel composition for the penny in 2006. This change was marked by the inclusion of the Royal Canadian Mint's logo—a stylized maple leaf within a circle—on the obverse of the coin, situated below the Queen’s portrait.
The portrait featured on this coin is the work of artist Susanna Blunt, whose design was adopted in 2003. Blunt’s depiction of the Queen, which notably lacks a crown and focuses on a more modern, regal appearance, was designed to reflect a contemporary monarchy. The introduction of the magnetic variety in 2006 served as a practical response to rising metal costs and changing minting technologies, signaling the final era of the denomination before its official discontinuation in 2012.
