Where it came from
This 1998 crown was minted by the Isle of Man to commemorate the FIFA World Cup held in France. The Isle of Man often issues commemorative coinage featuring themes of international sporting events, a practice that appeals to both numismatists and collectors of sports memorabilia. These coins were produced under the authority of the Manx government and were intended primarily for the collector market rather than general circulation.
The design of this specific issue features an iconic representation of a football player holding a ball, celebrating the spirit of the tournament. The reverse typically bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, consistent with the standard coinage of the British Crown Dependencies at the time. The aesthetic is characteristic of late 20th-century commemorative issues, which sought to balance official royal portraiture with dynamic, event-specific iconography to mark global cultural moments.
