Where it came from
This 1 Crown coin was issued by the Isle of Man in 2002 to commemorate the FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. As the Isle of Man frequently issues commemorative coinage under the authority of the British Crown, this piece was designed to appeal to both collectors of sporting memorabilia and numismatists interested in modern commemorative issues.
The reverse of the coin features a dynamic representation of a football player in motion, capturing the energy of the sport, while the obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The design reflects the global excitement surrounding the 2002 tournament, which was the first World Cup to be co-hosted by two nations, marking a significant moment in the history of international football.
