Where it came from
This 2013 one-dollar coin was issued by the New Zealand Post as part of a commemorative series celebrating the film trilogy The Hobbit. Released in conjunction with the Peter Jackson film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, the coin highlights the character Legolas Greenleaf. The series served as a significant cultural tie-in, leveraging New Zealand's status as the filming location for Middle-earth to boost numismatic interest among fans and collectors worldwide.
The coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and an illustration of the character Legolas, portrayed by Orlando Bloom, on the reverse. The design team focused on creating a vibrant, colorized representation of the elf archer to appeal to the cinematic fanbase. While legal tender in New Zealand, these pieces were produced primarily as non-circulating collector items, reflecting a trend of pop-culture themed currency that gained notable popularity in the early 2010s.
