Where it came from
The 2013 Tauriel 1 Dollar coin was minted by the New Zealand Post as part of an official commemorative collection celebrating The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Released to coincide with the film's theatrical debut, these coins were produced under legal tender status in New Zealand to capitalize on the international cultural phenomenon surrounding Peter Jackson's film trilogy, which was filmed extensively within the country.
The coin features an illustration of the woodland elf Tauriel, a character created specifically for the film trilogy by screenwriters Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. The design sought to blend the whimsical aesthetic of Middle-earth with traditional numismatic standards, featuring the 4th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse. The collection was generally received by enthusiasts as a high-quality piece of film memorabilia, appealing both to coin collectors and fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's expanded universe.
