1 Dollar - Victoria

The Hong Kong one-dollar coin of 1866 was minted during a period of colonial expansion when British authorities sought to establish a reliable local currency to facilitate trade in the Far East. Produced at the newly established Royal Mint in Hong Kong, the coin was intended to replace a chaotic mix of foreign silver currencies, such as the Spanish and Mexican dollars that dominated regional commerce, by offering a standardized British alternative.

The coin features a portrait of Queen Victoria designed by Leonard Charles Wyon, the son of William Wyon and a notable engraver at the Royal Mint. Despite the effort invested in its design and production, the coin was poorly received by the local merchant community, who were accustomed to the specific silver weight and fineness of the Mexican dollar. Consequently, the minting process was abandoned after only one year, making the 1866 issue a rare and significant relic of British monetary policy in the region.
