1 Dollar - Elizabeth II (WWI Armistice)

The 2018 Canadian one-dollar coin, often referred to as the Armistice coin, was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the 1918 Armistice. This historic moment marked the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front in the First World War, an event that resonates deeply in Canadian history as it solidified the nation's identity on the global stage. The coin serves as a solemn tribute to the sacrifice of those who served and the long-awaited return of peace to a war-torn world.

The design of the coin, created by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw, captures the profound emotions of the era through the depiction of two figures: a soldier and a nurse. The soldier bows his head in reflection while a nurse stands beside him, symbolizing both the sorrow of lost comrades and the hope for a future defined by peace. The composition is noted for its evocative restraint, focusing on the human toll of the conflict rather than the machinery of war, and it was well-received by collectors for its dignified tribute to Canadian veterans.
