1 Penny - George V (Kookaburra Pattern - Type 6a)

The 1919 Kookaburra pattern penny emerged during a period of experimentation for the Australian Commonwealth, as officials sought to replace the utilitarian British-style coinage with designs reflecting a distinct national identity. Following the federation of Australia, the government commissioned various proposals for a new circulating currency, with the kookaburra serving as a prominent symbol of the Australian bush. This specific pattern, categorized as Type 6a, was produced as a trial strike to test the aesthetic and technical viability of incorporating local fauna into the nation's legal tender.

The design was largely influenced by the artistic standards of the period, reflecting a desire to distance Australian coinage from the imperial imagery of King George V. The kookaburra motif, characterized by its detailed relief, was intended to evoke a sense of uniquely Australian character. While the pattern is highly regarded by numismatists today for its historical significance and rarity, it was ultimately not adopted for mass production, as the government opted to maintain more traditional designs for the issued coinage of the era.
