The 1920 Kookaburra pattern halfpenny was struck by the Melbourne Mint during a period when the Australian government was exploring potential new designs for the nation’s coinage. Amidst the post-World War I climate, there was a growing desire for Australian currency to feature distinctly local imagery rather than traditional British motifs. The resulting pattern, featuring a kookaburra perched on a branch, was designed by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal, a renowned sculptor who had previously worked on the coinage of King George V.

Despite its aesthetic appeal and the strong nationalistic sentiment it captured, the coin never entered general circulation. The design was ultimately rejected for mass production due to concerns over the complexity of the relief and the costs associated with shifting away from the established imperial design standards.
