The 1919 Australian shilling holds a significant place in numismatic history as it marks the final year of the higher-purity sterling silver composition. Following the conclusion of World War I, the British Empire sought to reduce the silver content in its coinage due to the rising market price of the metal, leading to the debasement of the shilling from .925 sterling silver to .500 fine silver starting in 1920. The coin features the portrait of King George V, designed by Sir Bertram Mackennal, whose initials appear at the base of the monarch's neck.
