Where it came from
The 1902 Australian Sovereign was struck at the Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth branch mints following the accession of King Edward VII to the British throne. These gold coins were minted as legal tender throughout the British Empire, serving as a pillar of the gold standard and a symbol of colonial economic stability during the transition from the Victorian era to the Edwardian period.
The obverse design, featuring the portrait of King Edward VII, was created by the artist George William de Saulles. His profile replaced the long-standing portrait of Queen Victoria, representing a modern shift in British coinage. The reverse design maintains the classic Saint George and the Dragon motif by Benedetto Pistrucci, an iconic piece of numismatic art that has remained a hallmark of the sovereign series for generations.
