Where it came from
The 2000 Australian five-dollar coin featuring a hockey design was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as part of the celebration surrounding the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. This commemorative series served to capture the spirit of various sports included in the Summer Games, providing a tangible keepsake for collectors and a way to memorialize Australia's role as the host nation. The coin was produced as an aluminum-bronze legal tender piece, intended both for circulation and as a specialized memento for numismatists.
The obverse of the coin displays the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf, which became a staple on Australian coinage during the late 20th century. The reverse design focuses on the kinetic energy of field hockey, reflecting the Royal Australian Mint’s approach to the series, which emphasized dynamic athletic action. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by the collecting community for its thematic connection to the national excitement surrounding the Olympic movement in Australia.
