1 Tael - Guangxu (Pattern; Hu Poo; gold)

Commissioned in 1903, the Guangxu gold 1 Tael coin—often referred to as the Hu Poo pattern—was struck as a trial piece for the Hu Pu (the Ministry of Revenue) in Tianjin. During the late Qing Dynasty, the imperial government sought to modernize China’s chaotic monetary system by introducing a unified currency based on the tael standard, reflecting both traditional weight measurements and Western-style mechanical minting practices.

The design, characterized by the depiction of a central dragon surrounded by clouds and the denomination inscribed in both Chinese characters and Manchu script, was intended to project imperial authority and technological progress. However, due to political instability and debates over whether to adopt a dollar-based or tael-based system, these patterns were never placed into circulation. Today, they remain significant historical artifacts that illustrate the transitional era of Chinese numismatics during the twilight of the imperial period.
