2 Mace - Guangxu (Pattern; Hu Poo; bronze)

The 1903 Hu Poo (Board of Revenue) pattern coinage was commissioned during the final years of the Qing Dynasty as an attempt to reform and centralize China's chaotic monetary system. Designed by the Tianjin Mint, these coins were part of a series intended to replace the diverse provincial issues with a standardized national currency based on the decimal system, reflecting the government's desperate need to modernize financial infrastructure amidst increasing foreign economic pressure.

The design of the 2 Mace pattern is notable for its departure from traditional Chinese numismatic aesthetics, incorporating a dragon motif surrounded by English and Chinese legends, which served to facilitate international trade. Despite the technical proficiency of the minting, the coins were never issued into general circulation due to internal political resistance and the subsequent collapse of the Board of Revenue's monetary reform efforts, leaving these specimens as highly sought-after remnants of a failed transition toward imperial fiscal unity.
