The Maria Theresia Thaler was first struck in 1780, the year of the Empress's death, to serve as a standardized trade currency for the Austrian Empire. Due to its high silver purity and consistent weight, the coin gained immense popularity in international trade, particularly throughout the Levant and East Africa. It was so highly trusted as a medium of exchange that it continued to be minted long after the monarch's passing, becoming one of the most recognized and widely circulated silver coins in history.
The design was finalized by Austrian engraver Franz Xaver Würth, featuring the portrait of Maria Theresia on the obverse and the imperial double eagle on the reverse. Because of its enduring reputation for reliability, multiple mints—including Vienna, London, Paris, and Rome—produced restrikes throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to meet continuous demand from merchants who refused to accept other forms of currency.
