Where it came from
This rare gold 10 Yuan pattern coin was minted in 1926 during the chaotic Warlord Era of China. It was commissioned by the notorious Shandong warlord Zhang Zongchang, whose brief and brutal control over the province saw him minting coinage to assert authority and facilitate local commerce. As a pattern issue, the coin represents a trial striking meant to test the design and composition before potential wider circulation that never fully materialized.
The coin bears the likeness of Zhang Zongchang, a bold choice that reflected his personality and the desire to project strength in a fractured political landscape. Numismatic scholars view these pieces as significant markers of regional power during the Republic of China period. Because of their limited production and the volatile nature of the Shandong regime, these pattern issues are highly sought after by collectors of Chinese revolutionary and warlord-era coinage.
