10 Stuivers (Dutch West India Company; Recife)

The 10 stuivers coin represents a fascinating intersection of colonial conflict and economic necessity. Minted in 1654 in Recife during the final days of the Dutch West India Company’s presence in New Holland, these pieces were emergency coinage. As the Portuguese forces besieged the city, the Dutch administration lacked sufficient circulating currency and resorted to counterstamping or striking local issues to pay their troops and maintain trade, effectively documenting the waning influence of the Dutch in Brazil.

The design of these emergency issues is utilitarian, reflecting the haste and scarcity of the period rather than the artistic flourishes of European metropolitan mints. These coins were typically struck on square planchets, a hallmark of Dutch emergency coinage known as 'klippe,' which allowed for faster production under duress. Their survival is rare, as many were melted down or lost in the turmoil of the ensuing conflict, making them significant artifacts of the brief and volatile history of Dutch colonial Brazil.
