Where it came from
This 100-dollar gold coin was issued by the Cook Islands in 2021 to commemorate the 88th birthday of Emperor Akihito of Japan. Such commemoratives are typical of the Cook Islands' numismatic program, which often produces limited-mintage legal tender coins featuring international figures and historical milestones to appeal to the global collector market. The choice of an 88th birthday is significant in Japanese culture, where the age of 88 is celebrated as 'beiju' or 'rice year,' symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
The coin features a formal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, as the Cook Islands is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, maintaining the British monarch as head of state. The design of the reverse focuses on motifs reflecting Japanese imperial tradition and the milestone birthday. These pieces are crafted as proof-quality bullion coins, intended primarily for commemorative display rather than daily circulation, and they represent a niche segment of commemorative coinage produced under the auspices of a sovereign island nation.
