Where it came from
This 5-dollar commemorative coin was issued by the Cook Islands in 2017 to mark the 84th birthday of Emperor Akihito of Japan. Such issues are part of a broader tradition of small island nations issuing legal tender commemorative coinage to celebrate international milestones, historical events, or cultural figures, primarily for the global numismatic collector market.
The coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, as she remains the constitutional head of state for the Cook Islands, while the reverse depicts motifs honoring the Emperor. These pieces were designed to appeal to collectors interested in modern commemorative minting, focusing on high-relief detailing and symbolic iconography that bridges the diplomatic history between the Commonwealth and the Japanese Imperial house.
