Where it came from
This 1000 Francs CFA coin was issued by Burkina Faso in 2017 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1947 Roswell UFO incident. Produced as part of a trend in modern numismatics where smaller nations mint thematic, non-circulating legal tender for international collector markets, the coin serves as a novelty piece rather than a functional currency. Its design taps into the enduring cultural fascination with extraterrestrial phenomena and the specific lore surrounding the crash site in New Mexico.
The aesthetic of the piece is typical of commemorative issues from this era, utilizing colorized printing techniques to depict a saucer-shaped craft and a stylized landscape. The design focuses on high-contrast imagery intended to appeal to enthusiasts of ufology and pop culture curiosities. While it carries the legal denomination of 1000 Francs, such coins are minted primarily as keepsakes or speculative items, finding their place in private collections rather than the standard monetary system.
