Where it came from
The 2016 1000 Francs CFA coin featuring the African buffalo is part of a broader series of bullion-style coins issued by the Republic of Burkina Faso. These coins were minted to provide legal tender commemoratives that celebrate the diverse and iconic wildlife of the African continent, a popular theme in the modern numismatic market. The series is typically struck in precious metals to appeal to both collectors of African regional coinage and investors interested in high-relief wildlife designs.
The aesthetic of the coin emphasizes the raw power and rugged nature of the buffalo, rendered through detailed engraving techniques that highlight the animal's textured coat and horns. These designs are intended to evoke the spirit of the savanna, functioning as both a currency unit and a piece of artistic iconography. While the coin serves as official currency within the West African Economic and Monetary Union, its primary distribution occurs through specialized numismatic dealers who cater to a global audience interested in themes of natural conservation.
