1000 Francs CFA (The American Buffalo - Irregular)

The 2016 1000 Francs CFA coin featuring the American Buffalo design is part of a series of commemorative issues produced for Burkina Faso. These coins were minted during a period when various West African nations authorized private mints to produce legal tender coins targeting international collectors. The design draws heavy inspiration from James Earle Fraser’s iconic 1913 Buffalo nickel, utilizing the classic profile of a Native American chief on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse, adapted here for a larger, modern format.

The issuance of these pieces was primarily driven by the numismatic market's demand for high-relief or aesthetically traditional designs on precious metals. While they hold legal tender status within the Communauté Financière Africaine zone, their primary purpose is decorative and collectible rather than circulatory. Critics often note that such issues serve as a bridge between historical American coin iconography and contemporary global collecting trends, though they remain distinct from the original U.S. Mint releases.
